The matching is executed on the basis of features, such as the arches, whorls, and loops, of the fingerprints. Pattern-based algorithms are used to match a person's fingerprints against databases to provide access to secure premises. In the early 2000s, with advances in technology, an advanced fingerprint system known as AFIS was introduced. AFIS can electronically capture data and analyze and identify a fingerprint pattern among millions of patterns.

Automated fingerprint identification involves automatic matching of one or more unknown fingerprints against an existing database of fingerprints. AFIS is mainly used by law enforcement agencies for identifying criminals.
