Worldwide Operating Systems and Subsystems Market Shares, 2015: Microsoft Deferral Dents the Market
This IDC study provides worldwide market share data for the operating systems and subsystems market for calendar year 2015.Despite the negative revenue growth and the potential for softness going forward, IDC still sees this market as being pivotal to the adoption of 3rd Platform compute paradigms. While the revenue numbers may be on the precipice of a long-term contraction, the need remains for operating systems and subsystems (in a full-stack form, or in the growing segment of "thin" operating systems [OSs]). In addition, there will be an ongoing need, for the foreseeable future, to continue supporting 2nd Platform applications, a market need that will continue for multiple decades to come."Operating systems and subsystems remain critical to modern compute infrastructure, as no cloud can operate without operating systems in the stack," said Al Gillen, group VP, Enterprise Infrastructure, IDC. "However, the softness in the view presented by the revenue totals highlights the increasing impact public cloud infrastructure is having on traditional datacenter spend."
