This IDC study includes projected spending on both licensed and subscription-based archiving and public cloud archiving services. In 2015, archiving software sales were approximately $1.5 billion representing 9.6% of the overall $15.6 billion storage software market. IDC expects the archiving market to reach $2 billion in spending by 2020, representing a compound annual growth rate of 5.7%."Driving archiving market growth is the ongoing adoption of public cloud services including archiving. The motivation among users to consider public cloud archiving is accelerated as firms continue to move production workloads such as email into public cloud offerings", said Laura DuBois, group vice president for Storage, Computing Platforms and Infrastructure Software at IDC. "Further, the use of one public cloud service for production workloads creates a desire by firms to use an alternative supplier for second copies, including archives of the production data. This is fueled by a desire to mitigate lock-in and minimize risk by diversifying data sets across multiple cloud targets."
