This IDC study profiles three telecommunications providers that have made an initial inning into Big Data and analytics (BDA) as one of their future business growth initiatives. The telcos IDC has chosen in this study are PLDT, the largest telecommunications provider in the Philippines; KT NexR, a Korea-based provider; and SoftBank, a Japan-based telco.
"The revenues and profit margins of telecommunications service providers have been challenged on every front due to rivalry with direct competitors, IT providers, as well as the traditional and new over-the-top (OTT) service providers. Telcos, like any other large enterprises, are finding new "blue oceans" that can bring them into the next phase of business growth. Leading telcos are making their headways into 3rd Platform technologies such as cloud, mobility, and now, BDA. However, in Big Data, the understanding of applications layer, business consultancy, and lines of business (LOBs) engagement are essential, and these are generally not the comfort zones of a telco. In Asia/Pacific, some telcos have invested in an internal BDA team and analytics platform, but this process of internal build-out generally takes a couple of years of research and development (R&D) and solution trials. For most telcos, partnerships with analytic platform solution providers are deemed to be the fastest way to bring solutions to market and also enable them to leverage their partners' industry knowledge, business intelligence and analytical skills, and consultancy capabilities while slowly building up its own Big Data team," says Sherlin Pang, senior research manager, Asia/Pacific Telecommunications.
