Telco Edge as a Cloud-Native Application Platform
The "cloudification" of the telco edge and back-end IT systems will enable communications SPs to offer edge high bandwidth and low latency services to enterprises and industries as they adopt edge and Internet of Things (IoT) edge in their business operations. The telco edge and the enterprise/industrial edge will become strategic IT/operational technology (OT) assets that drive business outcomes by utilizing IoT, big data and analytics (BDA), and artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze operational data. The construction of the telco edge as a cloud-native distributed computing system will necessarily require that software-defined networks (SDN), automation, and orchestration are built into the network across all domain, from core to edge. Thus, the transformation to the telco cloud is a multiyear task for communications SPs. IDC recommends that the telco edge must be deployed in phases to give communications SPs and content providers enough time to study, test, monitor, and optimize the telco edge platform."The optimal density of telco edge infrastructure is achieved when it is carefully paired with a 5G network, including the fiber access and transport metro and backbone network," says Bill Rojas, adjunct research director for IDC. He adds, "The adoption of cloud-native distributed telco edge platform means that communications SPs will be able to adopt DevOps and network operations (NetOps) practice in formulating the telco edge ecosystem of content providers, IT system/services providers, and network equipment providers."
