This IDC study presents a forecast of multichannel pay TV subscribers in the United States through 2020. Forecast segmentation reflects the three major market segments: cable, satellite, and telco TV services. This forecast also includes segmentation for residential multichannel pay TV subscribers. "IDC believes that the U.S. multichannel pay TV market will continue to experience subscriber erosion during the forecast period as penetration of residential services dips to under 70%," said Greg Ireland, research director, Multiscreen Video at IDC. "The launch of new over-the-top video services that compete directly with traditional pay TV will cause accelerated subscriber erosion during the forecast period. Even as pay TV providers work to make legacy services more attractive, some consumers will continue to look elsewhere for video content."
