Mavenir Analyst Event Recap: Solving the Business and Technology Challenges of the 5G Era
This IDC Market Note recaps Mavenir's analyst event in London and discusses how market conditions are shifting to favor telecom software vendors. As 5G era best practices remain in development, nonincumbent vendors are emerging to challenge the supplier status quo. This can be seen in almost every layer of the mobile network architecture ranging from the mobile core up to the RAN itself. From a high-level view, software is the driving force, as communications SPs slowly begin to embrace the idea of open APIs and cloud-centric frameworks. This push to a cloud- and software-led discussion is primarily driven by the need to shave costs from infrastructure but also by the ability to rapidly provision new services."When communications SPs virtualized the packet core, new entrants were able to take share from incumbent infrastructure suppliers, demonstrating viable solutions and cost savings. While still in the early innings, software suppliers are working hard to validate software-led solutions in the RAN," says Patrick Filkins, senior research analyst, Carrier Network Infrastructure.
