IDC Perspective: When Data Management Becomes a Security Tool

Traditional IT security focuses on the need to secure infrastructure, devices, applications, and identities. While these are critical aspects of a security strategy, this approach does not embrace the need to secure data. Concurrently, many Asia-based businesses are challenged to understand what data they have and what data is critical for business or compliance needs. "Data security is rapidly emerging as a new focus for IT security professionals," says Simon Piff, vice president for Blockchain and Security Research at IDC Asia Pacific. "And yet most data management processes and tools are not the focus of IT security teams. What is needed is a business-led data management strategy that can embrace and engage the security demands, which will translate into the need for new tools in the hands of security professionals."
