The Emerging Opportunity with Unlicensed Spectrum
Mobile data growth and consumption are exploding, with exponential growth in both downlink and uplink as 'mobile-first' consumers increasingly download and share data. Operators are not able to cope with their existing allocations of spectrum and hence, also need unlicensed spectrum. New models for spectrum sharing are emerging and driving innovation. As regulators identify and explore frameworks for unlicensed spectrum usage, several new and innovative models are coming up. CBRS is a great example of this new trend. Mobile operators will be joined by new entrants in the form of fixed-line, cable operators, and even neutral hosts that will utilize unlicensed spectrum to launch their services, says Shiv Putcha, contributing analyst, IDC Asia/Pacific.
