COVID-19 as a Driver of Innovation in Internet of Things in Asia/Pacific Healthcare
The shock of the severity and rapid transmission of COVID-19 across the globe has made stakeholders and policy makers realize that Internet of Things (IoT) technology has an important role to play in tracking hospital equipment, such as ventilators and personal protective equipment (PPE), assuring the supply chain of medicine and medical devices as well as aggregating test data and tracking/monitoring transmission movements throughout the population. "The technology infrastructure between mobile cellular, wearable devices and sensors, and cloud-enabled artificial intelligence (AI) and analytics means that it is possible to rapidly deploy solutions to monitor and collect data and perform advanced analysis to enable policy makers to make intelligent, rapid decisions," says Bill Rojas, adjunct research director, IDC Asia/Pacific. He further adds, "Since the scientific data is not readily available when pandemics occur with new pathogens, the role of IoT becomes critical and is facilitated if the country has adequate telecom bandwidth and coverage as well as access to cloud infrastructure."
