Business Strategy: Top Government Cloud Drivers Include Enabling LOB Sourcing and Increased Functionality

This IDC Government Insights report features survey responses from IDC's 2014 CloudTrack Survey of government executives regarding top drivers for deploying private and public cloud in government. This study also identifies government organizations' main concerns about cloud that are important inhibitors for organizations in considering cloud services or technologies and indicates that agencies plan on continued aggressive implementations designed to manage their cloud environments efficiently."IDC's 2014 CloudTrack Survey reveals a significant shift in private cloud trends — the top driver for moving to private cloud is listed as giving the business units more direct control over sourcing their own IT solutions," says Adelaide O'Brien, research director, IDC Government Insights. "It is significant that this driver was chosen by almost 70% of government responders, as this shift in emphasis of providing more direct control to the business units for sourcing their own IT solutions is evidence that government IT decision makers have begun the transition to the 3rd Platform," she adds.

The recent GAO report Cloud Computing: Additional Opportunities and Savings Need to be Pursued, GAO-14-753, September 2014, is also referenced. In this report, GAO reviewed the seven agencies that it reported on in 2012 to compare the agencies' progress to date in implementing cloud services. These seven agencies were selected based on the size of their IT budgets and experience in using cloud services.
