Description
Sweden Construction Market Size, Trend Analysis by Sector (Commercial, Industrial, Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities, Institutional and Residential) and Forecasts, 2022-2026
Summary
Construction in Sweden is expected to expand by 2.1% in 2022, before recording a contraction of 2% in 2023, owing to high construction materials costs and deteriorating external economic conditions which will slow economic growth. The outlook for growth in 2022 mainly reflects the ongoing expansion in the residential and infrastructure sectors, offsetting the weakness in the commercial sector. However, this is unlikely to persist over the coming quarters due to the impact of high inflation and rising interest rates on demand, which will weigh heavily on the residential sector. On the upside, Sweden is relatively well shielded from soaring energy costs due to its high share of hydro and nuclear power in its energy consumption mix, which could offset some of the supply-side pressure on the industry over the next year.
GlobalData expects the Swedish construction industry to rebound at an annual average growth of 2.6% from 2024 to 2026, supported by government’s investment in transport and energy infrastructure. Under the new national transport infrastructure plant, the government announced that investment in infrastructure will reach SEK881 billion ($86.6 billion) during 2022-27. Moreover, greater investment in renewable energy to support the country’s climate goals will support construction output over the forecast period. In October 2022, the government announced an investment of SEK937.5 million ($100million) for the construction of wind farms in the Kalmar County. In addition, the government is set to receive SEK34 billion ($3.7 billion) in total under the European Union (EU) Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), which is part of the NextGenerationEU plan. Through this fund, the Swedish government plans to implement its ‘Swedish recovery plan’ which will provide new investment for projects until 2026.
