Macroeconomic Outlook Report: India

Summary

Financial intermediation, real estate, and business activities contributed 22.9% to the gross value added (GVA) in 2024, followed by mining, manufacturing, and utilities activities (18.1%), and agricultural activities (17.8%). In nominal terms, the three sectors are expected to grow by 10.8%, 10.7%, and 9.3%, respectively, in 2025.

Emerging cities such as Bengaluru and Hyderabad are new drivers of economic growth, with a lower population share than old metro cities.

Among G20 economies, only India is expected to achieve a growth rate exceeding 6% in 2025, while all other nations are projected to grow at rates below 5%.

As of March 2025, the Indian government has set a target to construct 10,000 km of highways in the financial year 2025-26, aiming to raise INR300 billion ($358.5 million) through the monetisation of road assets. This target is lower than the current year's goal of 10,421 km and a monetisation target of INR390 billion ($466.5 million). The upcoming construction includes 1,100 km in North-Eastern states and 750 km in tribal areas, alongside a high-speed corridor network of 5,800 km. The monetisation will be achieved through Toll Operate Transfer (ToT) and Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT) models, each expected to generate INR150 billion ($179.4 million). The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has identified 24 highway assets for monetisation.
