Australia is the world’s second largest producer of copper, after Chile. In 2023, copper production in the country is expected to grow by 2.3% to 835.5kt backed by output from existing mines including Olympic Dam, Cadia, Carrapateena and Boddington. In addition, Aeris Resources’ Avoca Tank and IGO’s Savannah North are expected to begin operations in 2023. Australia’s copper mine production is expected to grow at a forecast period CAGR of 2.4% to reach 957.1kt in 2030. Several projects are scheduled for commencement during this period including Savannah North (2023), West Musgrave (2025), Eva (2025), Jervois (2025) and Hillside (2026). BHP, Newcrest, Oz Minerals (now acquired by BHP) and Glencore are the top copper producing companies in Australia, and together produced 497.2Kt of copper in 2022, up by 7.4% vs 2021.

The Australian copper industry is export-oriented with China being its largest export partner. However, political friction between these countries in the recent years has had a significant impact on trade relations. As a result, Australian exports of copper ores and concentrates, which is largely dependent on China, fell from 1,944kt in 2019 to 1,636kt in 2022 – nearly 16% decline.
