The number of mobile service subscriptions reached approximately billion globally at the end of March 2015.2 This number matches the world’s total population;3 however, many regions continue to show growth, as evolving markets expand and as customers in saturated markets subscribe with multiple devices. New generation smartphones and tablets are expected to make up the bulk of new device sales for the next several years; such that, by 2019, approximately % of all mobile data traffic will originate from smartphones ( %), tablets ( %), and laptops ( %).4
What is most amazing with this staggering number of personal devices is that no two of them are customized exactly the same way. Personalization of smartphones and tablets is leading this charge, due to the availability of apps for every need. Android users are now estimated to have access to million apps,5 while Apple iOS users have access to million apps.6 These come through retail channels such as Google Play and the Apple App Store, respectively.
As exciting and lucrative as the global app store business might be, the next level of digital services opportunity is now arriving from communications service providers (CSPs). No, this isn’t the walled garden concept of 10 years ago. CSPs and businesses, in nearly every industry imaginable, are coming together as ecosystem partners to provide digital services to billions of consumers and business customers. For example, CSPs in China, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, are rapidly transforming to digital services providers (DSPs) capable of delivering not only mobile broadband, voice and messaging connectivity, but anything else their ecosystem of partners brings to bear.
