Docker Containers: Now Playing at a Cloud Service Provider Near You

The IT world is on to its next buzzword. Even as enterprises continue to embrace virtualization and cloud computing services, a new technology, containers, has been making waves in the IT industry.

Container technology uses operating system (OS) or kernel-based virtualization to share the OS among application instances. Containers package applications into lightweight units, with each container instance consisting of dedicated CPU, RAM, file system, and storage resources, while sharing the host OS. Containers are self-contained application packages that can be easily built and shipped across multiple environments (e.g., development, test and production), and across infrastructure (e.g., enterprise servers, private cloud, and public cloud). IT containers are very similar to shipping containers that can be moved across global locations in a seamless manner.

Container technology is not new, per se; it has been used for distributed computing by developers within hosting and Web companies for a long time.2 Docker, an open-source container technology, has gained rapid traction in the market since mid 2013.3 Docker, offered by the company with the same name, Docker Inc., has become synonymous with container technology. For clarity, Docker, the container technology will be referred to as Docker, and the company will be referred to as Docker Inc., throughout this paper.

In this SPIE, we present analysis on container technology and its benefits; evaluate Docker (the technology) and Docker Inc.’s (the company) growth story; and summarize the initiatives of leading cloud vendors to support Docker.
