Global Professional & Scholarly E-Book Publishing

This report forecasts to 2029 global professional and scholarly e-book publishing revenues by segment in US dollars. Segments include: scientific and technical, medical, legal, business, and social science and humanities.

To illustrate historical trends, world and segment revenues are provided for 2022, 2023, and 2024.

Major world regions are also segmented for 2024 by North America, Europe, Asia/Pacific, and rest of world.

E-books are defined as a version of a literary work that is rendered, stored, distributed and read in digital form. This report is specifically focused on scholarly monographs, professional reference and training, and upper level university textbook publishing. Subject matter includes scientific, technical and medical (STM), the social sciences and the humanities (SSH), law, and business.

This report considers digital titles delivered as PDF downloads, online access, or another e-book format. Some of these titles have a print analog that is available for sale, while others are only available in electronic form.

Digital delivery is not limited to e-readers, as is the case in trade publishing, but includes collections that are large parts of library e-book use. Also included are parts of databases that contain or are derived from enriched versions of books, such as Knovel in engineering.

Many health science books are scattered throughout general e-book vendors’ collections, such as EBSCOhost and Ebook Central. Others are available on platforms that require subscriptions, such as ClinicalKey (Elsevier), the STAT!Ref (TDS Health) medical database, or AccessMedicine (McGraw Hill).

Some publishers, such as Elsevier on ScienceDirect or Springer Nature on SpringerLink, make e-books available for purchase via their flagship platforms. Further, many reference platforms offer e-book purchase options, such as Books@Ovid (Wolters Kluwer).

All revenue at the publisher level is included, whether from one-off sales, subscription sales, or licensing.

Other various topics, including profiles of pertinent leading companies, are covered in this report. A full outline of report items by page is available in the Table of Contents.
