A major area of IoT implementation is remote patient monitoring. The NHS is actively funding programs aimed at managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and Parkinson's disease through remote monitoring solutions. For example, the Parkinson's KinetiGraph watch, a sophisticated wrist-worn sensor, continuously monitors patient movements for up to six days, sending data to healthcare providers to assist in medication adjustments or necessary interventions. These initiatives are designed to minimize hospital readmissions and empower patients to manage their health conditions from home.

Moreover, NHS trusts are adopting real-time location systems (RTLS) to track medical devices, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and reducing the incidence of lost equipment. Trials conducted at Mid Cheshire Hospitals and Princess Alexandra Hospital from August 2024 to April 2025 have successfully implemented RTLS. Additionally, connected ambulances are being utilized to improve emergency care by relaying real-time patient information to hospitals.

The increasing demand for telehealth and virtual care is further driving the adoption of IoT, as connected devices enable real-time data sharing during virtual consultations. The UK's strong regulatory framework, which includes compliance with stringent medical device regulations and data protection laws, is also vital in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of these medical devices.
