The dialysis equipment market in Ukraine is heavily influenced by the ongoing conflict, which has had a profound impact on the country’s healthcare system and overall public health. Accurate, nationwide data on the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) or the number of patients receiving dialysis between 2023 and 2025 remains difficult to obtain due to widespread displacement and system disruption. Nonetheless, the need for renal replacement therapy (RRT) among individuals with kidney failure remains critical.
A study published in June 2024 on nephrological care during wartime revealed that despite a significant reduction in Ukraine's population, the number of patients with stage 5 CKD continued to grow. By the end of 2023, the national registry recorded 10,748 such patients, signaling a sustained or possibly rising burden of advanced kidney disease. The conflict has worsened existing health conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension—key risk factors for CKD. A survey conducted between June 2022 and February 2024 among patients with Type 2 diabetes, and published in April 2025, showed a marked increase in HbA1c levels, highlighting the war's severe impact on diabetic management and the resulting heightened risk of kidney complications.
Access to healthcare has also been severely disrupted. Reports from the World Health Organization in August 2024 detailed attacks on healthcare infrastructure, while a March 2025 analysis by VoxUkraine noted that damaged facilities and staffing shortages have made it increasingly difficult for patients to access medical services. Despite these challenges, efforts to continue dialysis treatment persist. However, logistical constraints have forced some centers to modify treatment protocols, including reducing dialysis frequency, as noted in the June 2024 nephrology study.
Data from the ERA Registry, based on 2021 figures and published in March 2025, reported a home dialysis prevalence of 9.4% in Ukraine. This suggests that even under adverse conditions, home-based therapies are being utilized alongside in-center dialysis where available. Overall, the ongoing crisis highlights a critical and urgent need for reliable dialysis infrastructure and equipment to ensure continued, life-sustaining treatment for kidney patients in Ukraine.
