Global & Ukraine Catheters Market to 2033
Description
The catheter market in Ukraine is witnessing consistent growth, influenced by various demographic, medical, and healthcare system factors. A major contributor to this growth is the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, particularly cardiovascular issues, which are the leading cause of mortality in Ukraine, responsible for over 60% of deaths. In major hospitals in Kyiv and Kharkiv, procedures such as cardiac catheterization and angioplasty have become commonplace, indicating a strong demand for specialized cardiac catheters. Cardiac surgeon Borys Todurov highlighted in late 2024 that Ukraine requires around 200,000 angiographic and stenting procedures annually, yet only about 15% of this need is currently met, pointing to a significant gap in catheter-based cardiovascular treatments.
The rising rates of diabetes, especially among the elderly, have also increased the demand for vascular access catheters used in dialysis and long-term care. Furthermore, the number of surgical procedures in both public and private healthcare settings is on the rise. In urban areas like Lviv, the growth of minimally invasive surgeries has led to a higher utilization of central venous catheters and specialized devices such as ablation and electrophysiology catheters.
Infection prevention in hospitals has become increasingly important. A 2022 multicenter study across 15 maternity hospitals in Ukraine, involving 15,892 women undergoing cesarean sections, found a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) rate of 13.6%. Common pathogens included E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, and Enterococcus spp., with many strains showing multidrug resistance. This has prompted hospitals to adopt single-use and antimicrobial-coated urinary catheters to meet EU infection control standards.
The aging population in Ukraine is another significant factor driving the demand for catheters. Elderly individuals suffering from chronic urinary incontinence, limited mobility, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) increasingly depend on Foley or intermittent catheters. Healthcare facilities in cities like Dnipro and Odessa report regular use of urinary catheters as part of standard elder care practices.
Additionally, healthcare reforms and the expansion of trauma care due to the ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine have improved ICU and surgical facilities, where vascular and drainage catheters are crucial for managing trauma and burn cases. Although Ukraine still relies heavily on imports, local production is gradually increasing. In 2023, Ukraine exported around US$1.31 million worth of catheter-related products (under HS code 901839), with Poland being the largest recipient, accounting for over US$720,000 of the total. This trend indicates a growing domestic capacity to assemble and export basic catheter types, likely influenced by currency fluctuations and logistical challenges related to the war.
These factors—from documented CAUTI rates and surgical backlogs to trade statistics—collectively illustrate how the burdens of chronic diseases, infection control measures, an aging population, trauma care needs, and changing supply dynamics are currently influencing the catheter market in Ukraine.
