Global & Taiwan Laparoscopic Devices Market to 2031
Description
Vietnam’s laparoscopic devices market is undergoing rapid expansion, fueled by rising healthcare spending, a growing burden of chronic diseases, and an increasing shift toward minimally invasive surgical (MIS) approaches. The country sources over 90% of its medical equipment—particularly laparoscopic devices—from key international suppliers, including Japan, Germany, the United States, China, and Singapore. To support this trend, the Vietnamese government promotes medical equipment imports by maintaining low import tariffs and removing quota restrictions.
The adoption of MIS is steadily progressing in Vietnam, with hospitals investing in advanced surgical technologies across various specialties such as gastroenterology, gynecology, cardiology, and general surgery. For instance, the Hanoi French Hospital introduced a modern surgical microscope in March 2024 to support minimally invasive spinal procedures, exemplifying ongoing investments in cutting-edge medical tools. Robotic surgery is also gaining momentum in the country. A milestone was reached in December 2016 with Binh Dan Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City becoming the first Vietnamese institution authorized to perform robotic surgery on adults. This initiative has since extended to several prominent public hospitals, including Bach Mai, Cho Ray, Viet Duc, and the National Children's Hospital. Furthermore, the first privately operated robotic surgery center was launched by the Vinmec Healthcare System in July 2018.
Minimally invasive procedures are becoming increasingly common across surgical disciplines. A study titled Long-term Outcomes of Laparoscopic Distal Gastrectomy for Advanced Gastric Carcinoma, published in the Surgery, Gastroenterology, and Oncology Journal reviewed 119 cases between March 2022 and July 2023 in Hanoi. Remarkably, 97.48% of these patients successfully underwent laparoscopic surgery, demonstrating the growing competency and effectiveness of MIS for treating advanced gastric cancer.
Colorectal cancer, Vietnam’s fifth most prevalent cancer, is another area where minimally invasive techniques are gaining prominence. As global best practices increasingly favor laparoscopic colorectal resections due to faster recovery and shorter hospital stays, Vietnam is expected to follow suit. In gynecology, the use of laparoscopic instruments is also on the rise, supported by increasing rates of chronic conditions and an aging population, both of which are contributing to growth in the endoscopy market.
However, Vietnam’s healthcare system still faces structural challenges, including overcrowded hospitals, uneven access to care in rural regions, and disparities in medical service quality. Despite these issues, government initiatives aimed at boosting public healthcare spending and the country’s ongoing digital transformation in healthcare are helping to create a favorable environment for the continued adoption of advanced surgical solutions.
The Vietnamese laparoscopic device market is supported by major global manufacturers such as Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson, Stryker, Karl Storz, and Olympus. These companies are actively expanding their presence through training programs, local partnerships, and new product introductions. Reflecting this momentum, Vietnam recorded 1,447 imports of laparoscopic instruments between September 2023 and August 2024—an impressive 354% increase over the previous year. In August 2024 alone, there were 75 shipments, representing a dramatic 3,650% year-over-year growth compared to August 2023, underscoring the market’s accelerating pace.
