Global & Spain IoT Medical Devices Market to 2033
Description
Switzerland offers a dynamic and intriguing environment for IoT medical devices, marked by its exceptional healthcare system, advanced technological capabilities, and a historically fragmented approach to digital health. While the country is celebrated for its high-quality healthcare, it is actively working to unify its digital health framework to fully harness the potential of IoT technologies.
The Swiss government has initiated the DigiSante program, which will run from 2025 to 2034, with the goal of addressing the digitalization challenges within the healthcare sector. This initiative, spearheaded by the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH/BAG), aims to enhance the digital health infrastructure through the development of standards, secure data frameworks, and modern health IT practices. Notably, Trifork was selected for a framework agreement under the DigiSante program in July 2025.
Despite being a frontrunner in scientific and medical innovations—ranking first in medical advancements according to the 2024 World Index of Healthcare Innovation—Switzerland has historically fallen behind in health digitalization, placing 19th in that same index, as reported by FREOPP. However, the concept of smart hospitals is gaining traction, with significant IoT implementation. For instance, the Kantonsspital Baden (KSB) is collaborating with Siemens to deploy 2,000 IoT tags and 7,000 IoT sensors. These devices provide real-time location services (RTLS) for essential medical equipment such as hospital beds and wheelchairs, while sensors are utilized for diagnostics and monitoring of hospital environments. This initiative aims to transform KSB into one of the most advanced hospitals in the country, enhancing patient care, operational efficiency, and energy management. Additionally, the new building project designed by Herzog and de Meuron incorporates IoT sensors for in-house localization of individuals and objects, facilitating asset tracking, people tracking, and wayfinding through the Eliona smart building assistant.
Although remote patient monitoring for chronic conditions has mostly been confined to pilot programs and research projects, the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the demand for such solutions. The introduction of stringent medical device regulations, in line with EU standards, guarantees that IoT medical devices entering the Swiss market adhere to high safety and efficacy benchmarks. Switzerland's dedication to innovation and its ongoing efforts to establish a cohesive digital health ecosystem indicate a promising growth trajectory for the adoption of IoT medical devices in the near future.
