Cancer is the second most common cause of death in Spain. According to GLOBOCAN 2022 data, approximately 280,000 new cancer cases were reported in the country that year. This growing incidence is driving a heightened demand for effective cancer therapies and improved patient care. The Spanish government actively promotes cancer awareness, supports innovation, and works to enhance access to advanced, life-saving treatments.
On May 6, 2024, the European Cancer Organisation (ECO), in collaboration with Fundación ECO (Excelencia y Calidad en Oncología), launched the initiative Time to Accelerate: Together Against Cancer at the Palacio de Santoña in Madrid. The event highlighted both the challenges and opportunities in addressing cancer and explored strategies Spain could implement to align more closely with the goals of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.
Moreover, government backing for cancer research, including through organizations like the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and the coordination of national cancer strategies, continues to drive progress in the cancer therapeutics sector. These efforts not only promote innovation but also help ensure that patients have broader access to effective treatments.
