The dialysis equipment market in South Africa is shaped by the increasing burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD), which is driven by the prevalence of non-communicable diseases, an aging population, and disparities in the healthcare sector. While South Africa has a relatively young population compared to many developed countries, the proportion of individuals aged 60 and above is steadily growing, reaching approximately 9.7% (or 6.13 million people) in 2024, according to Statistics South Africa. This demographic trend contributes to a larger pool of individuals at risk for kidney-related issues.
CKD remains a significant public health challenge in South Africa, with its prevalence closely tied to high rates of diabetes and hypertension. Diabetes affects 11.3% of South African adults, according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), and its incidence continues to rise, playing a critical role in the progression of CKD. Hypertension is similarly widespread, with studies from late 2024 revealing high prevalence rates, particularly among older adults in rural areas. These conditions are the primary drivers of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), which requires kidney replacement therapy (KRT) such as dialysis or transplantation.
The South African Renal Registry's Annual Report, published in October 2024, revealed that 9,342 patients were receiving KRT, which translates to a prevalence rate of 151 patients per million population. The report highlights a stark disparity in access to care, with the private healthcare sector reporting a prevalence of 771 per million, compared to just 45 per million in the public sector. Hypertensive kidney disease was identified as the most common primary cause of kidney failure in 2024. The growing number of KRT patients, compounded by the inequalities within the healthcare system, ensures a sustained and expanding demand for dialysis equipment and related services throughout South Africa.
