Description

South Africa is rapidly becoming a key market for Internet of Things (IoT) medical devices, influenced by its intricate healthcare system, a strong drive for digital transformation aimed at enhancing access and efficiency, and the rising prevalence of both chronic and infectious diseases. Although the population is relatively youthful compared to developed countries, with around 9.7% of individuals aged 60 and above projected for 2024, this demographic is on the rise. A study from May 2025 published in PMC revealed that multimorbidity, defined as the presence of two or more chronic conditions, affected 45.3% of the population analyzed in 2016, with hypertension (46.4%) and diabetes (22.6%) being particularly common.

The South African government is making significant investments in digital health initiatives. The Roadmap for the Digital Transformation of the South African Government, released in May 2025, outlines a strategy to modernize public service delivery, including healthcare, through enhanced coordination and shared systems. Additionally, the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) unveiled its strategic plan for 2025/26 to 2029/30 in April 2025, which emphasizes the regulation of medical devices.

Telemedicine and remote patient monitoring are pivotal in this transformation. South Africa boasts the highest rate of telemedicine adoption in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on specialist consultations, chronic disease management, and mental health services, as noted in a March 2025 review in PMC. The growing integration of telemedicine with home healthcare services is driving the demand for remote monitoring devices, particularly for elderly and vulnerable patients. While smart hospital initiatives are emerging, they often concentrate on localized solutions due to reductions in foreign funding. This trend towards local innovation includes efforts to digitize production and regulatory compliance processes for medical products.
