According to GLOBOCAN 2022 data, Portugal reported 69,567 new cancer cases that year, with breast and prostate cancers being the most frequently diagnosed. Approximately 33,762 deaths were attributed to cancer. This rising cancer incidence is driving the demand for more advanced and effective treatment options. As the number of patients continues to grow, the cancer therapeutics market is expanding, with healthcare providers striving to improve access to life-saving therapies and enhance patient outcomes. The increasing rates of cancer cases and related mortality are also prompting pharmaceutical companies to invest in research and development to deliver innovative therapies.
The Portuguese government has taken active steps to strengthen its cancer care landscape through various health initiatives and national strategies. In February 2023, Portugal signed a cooperative agreement with the United States aimed at fostering collaboration in cancer research, education, prevention, diagnostics, and treatment. In addition, the government has introduced policies to improve access to cutting-edge therapies, ensuring that patients receive timely and effective cancer care.
