Norwegian patients generally favor minimally invasive techniques because they allow for a quicker return to normal daily activities and work. Additionally, the adoption of robotic-assisted hernia surgeries is gaining ground across the Nordic region, including Norway. Although robotic techniques currently account for less than 5% of all hernia repairs, the region hosts over 120 robotic surgical platforms. Data from early adopters show a substantial jump in minimally invasive major ventral hernia surgeries—from 25% to 75% within just two years of implementing robotic systems—highlighting the considerable growth potential for robotic and laparoscopic procedures.

Bariatric surgery in Norway is predominantly performed using minimally invasive techniques. In 2023, approximately 3,898 bariatric surgeries were conducted, with sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass being the most common. In colorectal care, the country continues to face a significant disease burden, with 4,912 new cases of colorectal cancer reported in 2023, creating ongoing demand for surgical interventions.

Gynecological surgery in Norway is also shifting decisively toward laparoscopic methods. Between 2015 and 2024, the number of endometriosis-related surgeries rose by 91%, reaching 2,431 procedures in 2024, with many performed laparoscopically. Hysterectomy procedures have remained steady at around 40% of gynecological surgeries from 2019 to 2024, with robotic hysterectomies accounting for 15% as early as 2018, reflecting growing acceptance of robotic-assisted techniques. Moreover, surgeries for vaginal and uterine prolapse increased by 12% from 2023 to 2024, with a 5-percentage point rise in the proportion performed as day surgeries—indicating a broader shift toward less invasive, outpatient-friendly surgical solutions.
