Global & Nigeria Cancer Therapeutics Market to 2031
Description
According to GLOBOCAN 2022, Nigeria reported approximately 130,000 new cancer cases in that year. Of these, 48,096 cases were among males, with prostate cancer accounting for 37.5% of diagnoses. Among females, 79,667 cases were recorded, with breast cancer representing the highest proportion at 40.5%. This increasing cancer burden has led to a rising demand for effective cancer treatments, pushing the country’s healthcare system to strengthen its response. The Nigerian government has rolled out several initiatives to bolster its national cancer control strategy. One such effort is the second phase of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign, officially launched in May 2024, targeting the prevention of cervical cancer in young girls.
The National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) is at the forefront of improving cancer-related healthcare, focusing on advancing prevention, diagnostics, and treatment capabilities. NICRAT is also working to broaden the country’s cancer registries, increase screening efforts, and expand the oncology workforce. In August 2024, the institute hosted a roundtable in Abuja in collaboration with the Milken Institute and the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center. This event brought together around 50 stakeholders from across Nigeria’s cancer ecosystem to support the implementation of the country’s national cancer control strategy and research roadmap, with the goal of enhancing prevention, care, and innovation in cancer treatment.
