The dialysis equipment market in Kuwait is experiencing substantial growth, driven by a high prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), an aging population, and increasing rates of diabetes and hypertension. Hemodialysis remains the primary treatment modality, holding the largest market share, and is expected to see significant growth in the coming years. CKD rates in Kuwait are notably high, with diabetes and hypertension being the leading contributors. A 2024 multicenter study revealed that 56.6% of CKD patients in stages 3–5 who are not on dialysis have diabetes mellitus as the primary cause, with most of these patients also suffering from hypertension. This highlights the growing need for advanced dialysis technologies to manage the expanding patient base.
Moreover, Kuwait's healthcare system faces challenges in providing equitable care, particularly for the large expatriate population, which often encounters limited access to public healthcare and struggles with lower income levels. This situation can lead to suboptimal management of CKD. To address these issues, the country is working to improve dialysis infrastructure and enhance access to care. For example, the Ministry of Health (MoH) has been opening new dialysis units to increase treatment capacity. A new unit with 20 advanced dialysis machines was launched at the Sabah Al-Ahmad Health Center in July 2024, serving up to 120 patients and alleviating the need for patients to travel long distances for treatment.
Additionally, the opening of the Kuwait Center for Nephrology and Kidney Transplant in June 2024 marks a major advancement in healthcare infrastructure. This center, equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology, includes 15 dialysis beds, 83 inpatient beds, 11 isolation rooms, and 4 ICU beds. It offers a wide range of services, including kidney and stem cell transplants, dialysis, chemotherapy, and post-operative care. These developments underscore the pressing need for continued investment in dialysis equipment and services to meet the growing demand driven by the rising prevalence of CKD in Kuwait.
