Indonesia’s laparoscopic devices market is undergoing notable expansion, fueled by factors such as a rising population, increased healthcare spending, and a shift toward minimally invasive surgical (MIS) techniques due to their advantages—such as quicker recovery and fewer complications. This positive trend is bolstered by the national health insurance program (JKN), which covered over 90% of the population as of July 2023, enhancing access to healthcare and driving demand for surgical technologies.
The rise in adult obesity, largely due to lifestyle changes, is contributing to growing interest in bariatric surgery. As awareness increases regarding the health risks of elevated body mass index (BMI), demand for bariatric procedures—most of which are performed laparoscopically—is also increasing.
Minimally invasive techniques are becoming increasingly standard in general surgery. As of 2024, general surgery represented the largest share of Indonesia’s laparoscopic instrument market by revenue. The use of robotic-assisted laparoscopic systems is also accelerating within general surgical procedures. Hospitals serve as the primary users of these instruments, handling a wide range of both scheduled and urgent MIS cases.
In colorectal surgery, laparoscopic procedures are gaining wider acceptance, particularly for treating colorectal cancer—one of the most common cancers in the country. Surgery data reveals a growing number of procedures: colon surgeries rose from 1,792 in 2023 to 1,979 in 2024, while rectal surgeries totaled 947 in 2023 and 925 in 2024. Although the data does not distinguish between open and laparoscopic approaches, the overall procedure volume points to strong potential for minimally invasive adoption due to patient demand for quicker recovery and reduced surgical trauma.
The gynecological segment is also expanding, supported by greater public awareness of MIS options, an aging female population, and the availability of endoscopy training centers. Laparoscopy is frequently used to manage non-cancerous gynecological issues, and ongoing clinical research and adoption reflect growing comfort with these techniques.
Government initiatives to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and policies that support 100% foreign ownership in medical device companies are encouraging foreign investment and innovation. Although Indonesia currently imports most of its surgical equipment, efforts are underway to promote domestic manufacturing. Leading players in the market include global giants like Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson, Karl Storz, and Olympus, all of whom are helping to shape the landscape of laparoscopic surgery in the country.
