Description

The laparoscopic devices market in India is witnessing strong growth, driven by factors such as a rising burden of chronic diseases, a growing preference for minimally invasive surgeries due to their numerous benefits, and ongoing advancements in surgical technology. India performs approximately 30 million surgeries annually, with general surgery and obstetrics-gynecology being the predominant fields, presenting substantial opportunities for laparoscopic applications. The surgical environment is rapidly evolving, with a clear shift toward minimally invasive approaches. Bariatric surgery demand has notably increased, with the Obesity Surgery Society of India reporting a dramatic rise from around 200 procedures in 2004 to 20,000 in 2019—a 100-fold increase within 15 years. This upward trend, mainly driven by laparoscopic techniques, is expected to continue as morbid obesity rates climb. In 2022 alone, nearly 40,000 bariatric surgeries were conducted in India, with sleeve gastrectomy being the most frequently performed procedure. Several leading bariatric surgeons in the country have completed over 1,000 laparoscopic bariatric surgeries, including complex cases, highlighting the widespread adoption of these minimally invasive methods.

General surgery constitutes a significant segment of laparoscopic procedures in India. Laparoscopy has become the preferred minimally invasive technique among surgeons, accounting for over 80% of general surgeries, according to “Express Healthcare.” Common laparoscopic interventions include gallbladder removal, hernia repair, and appendectomy. A study published in Surgical Endoscopy in August 2023, focusing on rural India, found that among 123 laparoscopic surgeries, cholecystectomy represented 43.9% of cases and appendectomy 16.3%, illustrating the use of laparoscopy even in less urban areas. The shift toward minimal access surgery is largely motivated by benefits such as reduced postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery, which are especially valued in colorectal surgeries. Laparoscopic techniques are increasingly utilized for both benign and malignant colorectal conditions. A retrospective analysis from a tertiary care institute in India (covering 2014 to 2020) reported that 13.3% of 383 colorectal surgeries were laparoscopic, with most performed for malignancies (76.47%), including colectomies and low anterior resections. The study noted an average operative time of 150 minutes and a hospital stay averaging 5.88 days, underscoring the advantages of laparoscopic surgery in complex cases.

Gynecological surgeries represent another key area for laparoscopic device use in India. A five-year retrospective review from a tertiary center (June 2019 to June 2024), published in the Journal of Evidence Based Medicine and Healthcare in 2025, examined 1,212 laparoscopic gynecological surgeries, reflecting a high procedural volume. Additionally, research from rural India (2014–2018) found that out of 4,128 major gynecological surgeries, nearly 20% were laparoscopic, with total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) being the most common procedure (43.33%), followed by ovarian cystectomy. These findings demonstrate the growing feasibility and acceptance of laparoscopic techniques, even in rural regions. The benefits of reduced complications, shorter hospitalization, and faster recovery make laparoscopy particularly appealing to female patients.

Looking ahead, India’s surgical demand is projected to reach approximately 51 million procedures annually. The adoption of robotic-assisted surgeries, which build upon laparoscopic techniques, is also expanding rapidly, signaling technological progress in the country’s surgical practices. While challenges such as infrastructure limitations and uneven distribution of specialists—especially in rural areas—remain, ongoing investments in public healthcare and digital health advancements are expected to sustain and accelerate the adoption of advanced minimally invasive surgery across India.
