In 2024, Shanghai Renji Hospital spearheaded a pioneering multisite remote robotic surgery in partnership with institutions from Hong Kong and London. This procedure, a relay laparoscopic robotic gastrectomy, was conducted on a pig using a domestically developed remote surgical platform. Surgeons from Renji Hospital, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Royal Marsden Hospital successfully managed to transfer control across continents, showcasing the stability and precision of China's robotic systems in real-time clinical applications. This achievement confirmed the nation's capacity to perform remote surgeries with high-definition imaging and smooth control transitions.

In 2023, China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) granted approval for the Toumai Robotic Laparoscopic Surgical System to be used for a broader range of applications, including urology, general surgery, thoracic surgery, and gynecology. Created by Shanghai MicroPort MedBot, the Toumai system features a four-arm design, immersive 3D endoscopy, and real-time integration of diagnostic imaging. In 2024, Jilin University First Hospital executed a 5G-enabled remote laparoscopic robotic surgery utilizing the Toumai system, highlighting its versatility and teleoperation capabilities.

China's surgical robotics landscape also includes Ronovo Surgical's Carina platform, which has been approved for use across multiple specialties, and TINAVI's orthopedic robots, which are now operational in over ten hospitals. Additionally, Johnson and Johnson's Monarch system received approval for lung procedures, while Stereotaxis' Genesis robot is used for cardiac interventions. These advanced systems are being integrated into hospitals throughout Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, with support from academic institutions like the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Integration Technology. China's progress in robotic surgery illustrates the development of domestic technologies alongside the adoption of international innovations. With a strong infrastructure, regulatory backing, and international partnerships, China is poised to influence the future of laparoscopic robot-assisted surgery both regionally and globally.
