The dialysis equipment market in China is shaped by the combined challenges of a large and aging population alongside a significant prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The country is undergoing a rapid demographic shift, with individuals aged 60 and over exceeding 310 million in 2024, making up nearly a quarter of the total population, according to ET HealthWorld's January 2025 report. This proportion is expected to grow further, amplifying the incidence of age-related health conditions, including kidney dysfunction.
CKD has emerged as a major public health issue in China. A cross-sectional study, cited in a January 2025 PubMed Central publication, estimates the prevalence of CKD at 8.2% among adults, while other reports suggest that around 160 million people in China are affected by the disease.
The primary drivers of this growing burden are the rising rates of diabetes and hypertension. Hypertension is projected to impact 1.56 billion individuals aged 30–79 by 2025, as highlighted in an April 2025 study. Diabetes is also increasingly prevalent, with various 2024 studies indicating a substantial and growing diabetic population. These chronic conditions are directly contributing to the expanding number of patients progressing to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and requiring renal replacement therapy (RRT).
According to the Chinese Renal Data System (CNRDS), referenced in a December 2024 report, diabetic nephropathy became the leading cause of new hemodialysis patients in 2023, accounting for 29.9% of cases, surpassing primary glomerular diseases. Hemodialysis remains the most common treatment, used by approximately 90% of dialysis patients in China, which drives significant demand for dialysis equipment and consumables. With the confluence of an aging population and widespread chronic diseases, China represents a crucial market for dialysis equipment and related services.
