Global & Bangladesh Laparoscopic Devices Market to 2031
Description
The laparoscopic devices market in Bangladesh is in an emerging phase, gradually expanding as awareness of minimally invasive surgical (MIS) techniques increases. While challenges such as limited resources and a shortage of trained professionals persist, the use of laparoscopic procedures is becoming more common, especially in urban hospitals and larger medical institutions. The healthcare system is slowly advancing toward incorporating more complex surgical capabilities, with a growing focus on improving patient outcomes through less invasive procedures. As obesity rates climb, the demand for laparoscopic bariatric surgeries is expected to rise in the coming years.
Laparoscopy is gaining ground in general surgery. A study published on ResearchGate in May 2025 (with data collected up to early 2025) reviewed 172 laparoscopic cholecystectomy cases at a tertiary care hospital in Bangladesh. It found that 69.2% of the procedures were for chronic cholecystitis and 18.6% for acute cases, with a 9.9% conversion rate to open surgery and a mortality rate of approximately 1.1%. In pediatric surgery, laparoscopic appendectomy has been recognized as safe and effective. A study from Chittagong, conducted between October 2005 and July 2012, analyzed 1,809 pediatric laparoscopic appendectomies, showing an average surgery time of 39.8 minutes and an average hospital stay of 1.91 days. Similarly, in gynecology, laparoscopic methods are increasingly preferred. A study published in the Journal of Enam Medical College in May 2022 examined ectopic pregnancy management, with 27 cases treated laparoscopically. The findings supported the approach due to shorter operation times, reduced blood loss, and faster recovery compared to open surgery.
Laparoscopic colorectal procedures are also gradually being implemented. A prospective study at the National Institute for Cancer Research and Hospital in Dhaka, conducted from September 2018 to October 2019, involved 39 laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgeries. The average operation lasted 159.36 minutes, with a mean hospital stay of 4.56 days and a conversion rate of 12.82%. While these results show promise, managing complications such as anastomotic leaks, intra-abdominal abscesses, postoperative ileus, bleeding, and port-site infections remains a challenge.
In the gynecological domain, national efforts to improve maternal healthcare indirectly support the shift toward advanced surgical techniques. In 2023, 680 patients were admitted for fistula repair in Bangladesh, with 526 undergoing surgery. Among iatrogenic fistula cases, approximately 53.6% were linked to hysterectomy. This reflects a high volume of gynecologic surgeries, many of which could increasingly transition to minimally invasive methods as the country invests in infrastructure and surgical training.
