According to GLOBOCAN 2022, Bahrain reported approximately 1,383 new cancer cases in 2022, with breast and colorectal cancers being the most frequently diagnosed types. Factors such as changing lifestyles, rising obesity rates, and specific genetic predispositions contribute to the expected increase in cancer incidence in the country. Key risk factors for colorectal cancer include obesity, sedentary behavior, smoking, and diets high in fat but low in fiber, with nearly one-third of Bahrain’s population classified as overweight or obese. Projections indicate that cancer cases and related deaths could rise by 170% and 220%, respectively, over the next twenty years, highlighting cancer treatment as a critical focus for Bahrain’s healthcare system.
Bahrain has two public oncology centers primarily serving its citizens. A major development in the nation’s cancer care is the creation of specialized treatment facilities, such as the Bahrain Oncology Center (BOC), established in early 2019 at King Hamad University Hospital. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the BOC offers advanced diagnostic, surgical, and chemotherapy services. The center emphasizes high-quality patient care through a multidisciplinary approach and the use of the latest treatment techniques.
