The Performing big data analytics using Hadoop: its complex ecosystem is limiting CSPs’ adoption

A description is not currently available for this report.

Executive summary
Executive summary
Hadoop adoption has been slow amongst CSPs because it is a complex technology and has a fragmented ecosystem of over 120 projects
CSPs and vendors must understand the Hadoop ecosystem in order to implement the technology successfully
Recommendations
Hadoop architecture and components
Hadoop’s open-source software has multiple routes to market, and vendors should have a clear position when sourcing different components
Hadoop core was originally developed in 2006 and has been extended to create complex, competitive and divided development paths
Core Hadoop components offer increasing functionality, but with these developments comes increased complexity and potential redundancy
Hadoop components constantly change, and CSPs and vendors need to continuously consider which components they are going to support
Real-time components such as Spark and Apache Storm are going through significant changes
KEY VENDOR SOLUTIONS
OSS and BSS vendors have four alternative approached to select the distributions and components they adopt as part of their offerings
Cloudera was the first commercial Hadoop distribution and has the largest revenue amongst the top-three distributions
Hortonworks is Apache’s own commercial distribution of Hadoop, and is the fastest-growing of the top-three distributors
MapR’s distribution has the most proprietary components, but is widely accepted by CSPs and vendors to be the fastest for data processing
Examples of different OSS and BSS vendors’ approaches to the adoption and support of Hadoop
HADOOP IMPLMENTATIONS
Bouygues Telecom uses a Hadoop-based approach to improve customer experience
BT are using Hadoop for complex data analysis, and has accelerated its data ingestion velocity by a factor of 15
SFR has implemented a new enterprise data hub using Hadoop to understand and optimise each customer journey
China Unicom is using Hadoop to store and analyse 2 trillion monthly records from mobile Internet services
