Description

Fibre-to-fibre recycling dominated discussions at the 64th Dornbirn Global Fiber Congress (Dornbirn-GFC), held in Dornbirn, Austria, in September 2025. The congress shone a spotlight on circularity, particularly the circularity of protective clothing—the market for which is highly regional, shaped by regulation and dominated in Europe by workwear supplied through rental laundries. The protective clothing production chain can be monitored, and protective clothing items can be collected and recycled in a closed system—unlike the fashion chain, which is fragmented. This makes the protective clothing sector a uniquely promising area for innovation in circularity and, for this reason, the sector is likely to lead the way in demonstrating how fibre-to-fibre recycling can be scaled. Also, the rental model underpinning much of the workwear market is central to the potential of the sector for circularity. In particular, the laundries where rental garments are processed weekly for washing, repair and eventual replacement are well placed to act as collection points for end-of-life garments. Fibre-to-fibre recycling is no longer a fringe ambition but a central pillar of industrial strategy, and protective clothing—with its controlled rental model and regional value chains—is ahead of the game. The challenge now is to extend the progress being made in the protective clothing sector across the textile sector as a whole.
