Description

This comprehensive study offers an in-depth look at how law firms are adapting to the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, with a focus on training practices, prompt library adoption, and preparedness for the future of legal AI.

The report draws on detailed survey data from attorneys across a range of firm sizes, practice areas, and roles, providing readers with actionable insights into the evolving landscape of AI in legal practice. The findings reveal significant disparities in training, resource availability, and attitudes toward AI, making this report essential reading for law firm leaders, legal educators, and technology vendors.

Five Key Findings from the Report:

AI Training Is Widespread but Uneven:

While 63% of law firms offer some form of AI training—either mandatory (28.57%) or optional (34.69%)—nearly 29% provide no training at all. Smaller firms lag behind, with 56.25% of those with fewer than 23 lawyers reporting no training, compared to 0% in firms with over 1,000 lawyers.

Personal AI Training Is Common, Especially in Larger Firms:

A majority of attorneys (57.14%) have received formal AI training, but this varies sharply by firm size. In firms with more than 1,000 lawyers, 76.92% have had training, while only 50% in the smallest firms have.

Prompt Libraries Are Emerging but Underused:

Only 29.59% of firms have a prompt library or archive of AI templates, and just 20.41% of attorneys have ever used one. Adoption is highest in the largest firms (61.54%), but actual use remains rare across the board.

Training Content Shows Gaps—Especially in AI Veracity:

Training most often covers ethics (43.88%), drafting/document review (42.86%), and legal research tools (38.78%). However, only 14.29% of attorneys report training in determining AI veracity, highlighting a critical area for improvement.

Preparedness for the AI Future Is Divided:

Sentiment is split: 39.79% of attorneys feel their firms are well or somewhat prepared to train for the future of AI, while 39.80% feel somewhat or very unprepared. Larger firms are more optimistic, but many mid-sized and smaller firms express concern about readiness.

The report also explores who conducts AI training (from knowledge management teams to outside vendors), the frequency and adequacy of training, and whether firms track effectiveness metrics. Cross-table analysis reveals that firm size and technological adaptability are the strongest predictors of training access and engagement.
