Palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) is a by-product of palm oil refining, mainly produced by the deodorization step in physical refining. It is a substance rich in free fatty acids (FFA), usually between 80% and 95%. The main components include palmitic acid (about 45%) and oleic acid (about 40%). In addition, it contains a small amount of triglycerides (about 14%), squalene (about 0.8%), vitamin E (about 0.5%), phytosterols (about 0.4%) and other trace substances. At room temperature, PFAD is a light brown semi-solid and melts into a brown liquid when heated.
Its production stems from the need to remove free fatty acids and volatile substances during palm oil purification to improve the quality of edible oil (such as improving odor, taste and stability). PFAD itself is not suitable for direct consumption, but due to its high fatty acid content and low cost, it is widely used as a variety of industrial raw materials. Its uses include the production of biofuels (such as second-generation biodiesel through deoxygenation reactions), soaps, candles, animal feed, and oleochemicals (such as surfactants and lubricants). In addition, high-value ingredients such as vitamin E, squalene and phytosterols can be extracted for use in the nutritional supplements and cosmetics industries.
In terms of characteristics, the advantages of PFAD are that the raw materials are abundant (especially in major palm oil producing countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia, where annual production can reach hundreds of thousands of tons), the price is low (about 10%-20% cheaper than crude palm oil), and it has a high energy value. However, its high saturated fatty acid content and acid value may limit some applications, and potential oxidation stability issues need to be considered during processing.
In terms of the market, the demand for PFAD is closely related to the development of the biofuel and oleochemical industries. Malaysia and Indonesia, as the world's largest palm oil producers, have sufficient supply, which has promoted the export and use of PFAD. Major buyers include Europe (for renewable energy) and Asian countries (for industrial production). As global attention to sustainable raw materials increases, PFAD's status as a non-edible residue gives it an advantage in the food vs. fuel debate, but its sustainability is also under discussion due to its association with the palm oil industry chain.
Overall, palm fatty acid distillate is an economical and efficient multi-purpose material, and its value lies in waste utilization and diversified application prospects in the circular economy
