Montmorillonite Nanoclays is a natural or synthetic nano-layered silicate mineral belonging to the montmorillonite family of clays. It is mainly composed of aluminum silicate and has a high specific surface area (up to 800 m²/g), excellent ion exchange capacity and expansion. Its structure consists of two layers of silicon-oxygen tetrahedrons sandwiched by one layer of aluminum-oxygen octahedron, and the interlayers can adsorb water molecules or cations (such as sodium and calcium), which gives it unique physical and chemical properties. Montmorillonite is usually processed into nano-scale particles by exfoliation and surface modification (such as organic modification) to enhance its dispersibility and compatibility in polymer matrices. It is widely used in polymer reinforcement materials (improving strength and barrier properties), coating and paint thickening, drug delivery systems, and environmental protection fields (such as adsorption of heavy metals and organic pollutants).
