Monoammonium Glycyrrhizinate - Global Industry Market Analysis Report 2020-2031

Monoammonium Glycyrrhizinate is a monoammonium salt derivative made by chemical conversion of glycyrrhizic acid extracted from licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra or Glycyrrhiza uralensis). It has excellent anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, moisturizing and antioxidant properties and is widely used in cosmetics, oral care products, health foods and certain pharmaceutical preparations. Its chemical structure is the monoammonium salt of glycyrrhizic acid (a triterpenoid saponin), with a molecular formula of C42H62O16·NH4 and a molecular weight of about 822.93. It is a white to light yellow powder, easily soluble in water (solubility of about 0.5 g/10 mL) and propylene glycol, slightly soluble in ethanol, and has the best stability in the pH range of 4.5-7.0. The production of monoammonium glycyrrhizinate is usually completed by hot water extraction, concentration, acid hydrolysis (converting glycyrrhizic acid saponin into free acid) and neutralization reaction (adding ammonia water to accurately control the ratio of ammonium salt) of licorice root, followed by crystallization, centrifugation and drying processes. The purity usually reaches more than 98%, and the impurity content is low (for example, heavy metals<10 ppm) through high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or infrared spectroscopy (IR) detection. For example, in creams and lotions, monoammonium glycyrrhizinate as an active ingredient soothes sensitive skin and reduces redness and irritation by enhancing skin barrier function and inhibiting inflammatory factors (such as IL-6 and TNF-α); in oral care products such as toothpaste and mouthwash, its antibacterial effect prevents periodontitis and oral ulcers by inhibiting the growth of oral pathogens (such as Streptococcus mutans); in functional beverages or health products, it acts as a natural sweetener (30-70 times sweeter than sucrose) and antioxidant to improve taste and shelf life.

Monoammonium glycyrrhizinate has performed well in the health and beauty fields, but its advantages and disadvantages have triggered extensive discussions in science and the market. Supporters believe that its natural origin (derived from the traditional Chinese medicine licorice) and versatility make it an ideal choice for green chemistry and functional formulations. For example, its anti-inflammatory effect is suitable for the treatment of mild dermatitis, eczema or UV damage by regulating immune response and scavenging free radicals. Clinical studies have shown that its relief effect on skin irritation can reach more than 70%; in terms of moisturizing, its combination with hyaluronic acid can significantly increase the moisture content of the skin, which is suitable for dry or sensitive skin; in the antibacterial field, its inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa provides a natural alternative for oral hygiene products. In addition, the low toxicity of monoammonium glycyrrhizinate (LD50>2000 mg/kg, oral administration in rats) makes it safer in cosmetics and food, in line with international standards (such as the EU Cosmetics Regulation EC 1223/2009). However, critics point out that excessive use may cause side effects. For example, long-term high-dose intake (more than 100 mg per day) may cause hypokalemia, sodium retention, hypertension or edema due to the cortisol-like effect of glycyrrhizic acid, which is particularly risky for patients with renal insufficiency or hypertension. In addition, the production cost is high. The cultivation and extraction process of licorice root is limited by the climate (a cool and dry environment is required) and soil conditions (rich in nitrogen and phosphorus). The purification process (such as removing flavonoids and sugar impurities) is complicated, which may limit its popularity in the low-end market or mass consumer products. Some users also reported that the effect of monoammonium glycyrrhizinate varies from person to person. For example, some sensitive skin types may experience slight tingling, or its anti-inflammatory effect does not match the expected effect at high concentrations, and it needs to be used in combination with other active agents (such as aloe extract or vitamin E) to enhance the synergistic effect; in addition, its poor stability in acidic environments may affect the shelf life of some products.

In terms of the market, the demand for monoammonium glycyrrhizinate is closely related to the global personal care product market, the trend of natural ingredients, and the improvement of health awareness. Asia, especially China, has become the main market for monoammonium glycyrrhizinate due to its rich licorice resources (mainly produced in Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and Gansu), huge cosmetics industry (market size is expected to exceed 500 billion yuan in 2025) and traditional Chinese medicine cultural background. Chinese companies (such as Pechoin and Xiangyi Bencao) widely use this ingredient in anti-allergic skin care products, traditional Chinese medicine toothpaste and functional beverages, driving market demand growth. The North American and European markets pay more attention to high-end skin care and medicinal value. For example, in anti-inflammatory ointments, oral anti-allergic supplements and anti-aging essences in the United States and Germany, monoammonium glycyrrhizinate is favored for its naturalness and safety, and must comply with FDA GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) certification and EU ECOCERT organic standards. The growth of market demand is also driven by the trend of green consumption. Consumers are increasingly inclined to choose natural products that do not contain synthetic chemicals (such as parabens or synthetic fragrances), such as organic skin care products and sugar-free healthy foods; in addition, the increased attention to immune health and oral hygiene after the epidemic has also stimulated its application in health care products and oral care products. However, the market also faces several challenges, including the shortage of raw materials due to climate change (drought or floods affect licorice growth), over-harvesting or land degradation, which may push up prices; energy consumption in the production process (extraction and drying) and wastewater treatment costs may be restricted by environmental regulations (such as China's Water Pollution Prevention and Control Law); in addition, the low cost and wide availability of competing anti-inflammatory ingredients (such as aloe vera juice, green tea extract or Centella asiatica extract) may divert part of the market.

In the future, the development of monoammonium glycyrrhizinate may pay more attention to sustainability, efficacy enhancement and safety optimization. The development of biosynthesis technology (such as fermentation of glycyrrhizic acid derivatives by genetically engineered Escherichia coli or yeast) or the improvement of extraction efficiency (using supercritical CO2 extraction to reduce the use of organic solvents) may reduce costs and reduce environmental impact to meet the needs of sustainable development. The development of new formulations or sustained-release technologies (such as microencapsulation or liposome encapsulation) may enhance its anti-inflammatory, moisturizing and antioxidant effects, prolong the duration of action in the skin or mouth, and reduce the risk of side effects. In the pharmaceutical field, the potential of monoammonium glycyrrhizinate deserves further exploration, for example, in the treatment of autoimmune diseases (such as psoriasis or allergic rhinitis) or as an excipient for antiviral drugs (such as studies on inhibiting influenza virus replication are still ongoing), its low toxicity and biocompatibility provide the possibility for clinical application. In addition, its application in functional foods (such as antioxidant gummies or immune-enhancing beverages) may also become a new growth point. However, the industry still needs to face some challenges, including how to respond to the need for in-depth research on long-term safety (for example, the EU's daily intake limit for glycyrrhizic acid substances is 100 mg, and the metabolic pathway of monoammonium salts needs to be further verified), the stability of raw material planting and supply chains (such as the impact of climate change on licorice production), and the difficulty of maintaining differentiation in a highly competitive market (distinguishing from other natural anti-inflammatory agents). Overall, monoammonium glycyrrhizinate will continue to improve its position in the health and beauty field due to its natural properties, versatility and safety, but its future development needs to rely on technological innovation (biosynthesis and formula optimization), resource management (sustainable planting and certification) and market education (enhancing consumer awareness) to cope with increasingly stringent environmental requirements, regulatory restrictions and consumers' expectations for high-quality products.
