Medical PMMA is a polymer material widely used in the medical field. Its chemical name is polymethyl methacrylate, usually referred to as PMMA. Medical-grade PMMA has more stringent standards in terms of purity and biocompatibility.

From the perspective of chemical structure, PMMA is a linear polymer formed by polymerization of methyl methacrylate monomers. This structure gives it a series of unique physical and chemical properties. In terms of physical properties, PMMA has good optical properties, and its light transmittance can reach more than 92%, which is close to optical glass, which makes it important in the field of medical optics, such as the manufacture of contact lenses and artificial lenses. It also has high hardness and wear resistance, and can resist external scratches and wear to a certain extent, ensuring the service life of medical devices. At the same time, PMMA has a low density of about 1.18g/cm³, which is much lighter than glass and is easy to process and use.

In terms of chemical properties, PMMA has good chemical stability, is resistant to corrosion by chemicals such as acids and alkalis, and can maintain stable performance in different chemical environments. More importantly, medical-grade PMMA has excellent biocompatibility. It will not cause immune and toxic reactions in the human body, which is an important prerequisite for its wide application in the medical field. When it comes into contact with human tissue, it will not cause damage to human cells and tissues, and can safely exist in the human body for a long time.

The main synthesis methods of medical PMMA include bulk polymerization, solution polymerization, suspension polymerization and emulsion polymerization. Bulk polymerization is to make the monomer directly polymerize without adding solvent and diluent. The PMMA obtained by this method has high purity and good transparency, but it is difficult to dissipate heat during the reaction, which easily leads to uneven distribution of polymer molecular weight. Solution polymerization is to dissolve the monomer in an appropriate solvent for polymerization reaction. Its advantage is that the reaction system is easy to dissipate heat and the reaction temperature can be effectively controlled, but it will introduce solvent residues and require subsequent solvent removal treatment. Suspension polymerization is to disperse the monomer in water in the form of small droplets and polymerize under the action of an initiator. The polymer particles obtained by this method are uniform and easy to separate and wash. Emulsion polymerization is the process of polymerizing monomers in water in an emulsion state under the action of an emulsifier. The polymerization speed is fast and the product molecular weight is high, but the post-processing is relatively complicated.

In the medical field, medical PMMA has a wide range of applications. In orthopedics, it is often used as bone cement to fix artificial joint prostheses. When performing artificial hip and knee replacement surgery, bone cement is injected into the bone marrow cavity. It can quickly solidify and fill the gap between the prosthesis and the bone, providing a good fixation effect, ensuring the stability of the prosthesis, and helping patients restore joint function. In the field of oral medicine, PMMA can be used to make denture bases, dentures, etc. Due to its good biocompatibility and mechanical properties, it can meet the needs of the oral environment and provide patients with comfortable and durable oral prostheses. In the field of ophthalmology, PMMA is one of the important materials for manufacturing artificial lenses. Its high light transmittance and biocompatibility can replace diseased lenses and help patients restore their vision.
