Liquid polysulfide polymers are specialty elastomers, which are a class of polymers with sulfur atoms in the molecular main chain and highly reactive terminal groups. In their molecular structure, sulfur atoms endow the polymers with unique properties. These polymers usually exhibit different viscosities ranging from low to high, and are commonly seen as brown viscous liquids.

The synthesis of liquid polysulfide polymers mainly uses bis(2 - chloroethyl) formal (diform) and sodium polysulfide (Na₂Sₓ, x = 2.4 - 2.6) as the main monomers. During the polymerization process, 1,2,3 - trichloropropane (TCP) is often added to regulate the degree of branching of the polymer main chain. The polymerization reaction is carried out in an environmentally friendly water - based dispersion system through emulsion polymerization. The initially formed polymer has a high molecular weight. Subsequently, reductive splitting agents such as Na₂SO₃, Na₂S₂O₄, and NaSH are used to chemically reduce the high - molecular - weight solid polysulfide polymer latex to obtain a liquid polysulfide polymer with the target molecular weight, chain length, and adjust its thiol (SH) content.
