Description

Industrial-grade sponge zirconium is a metal zirconium product with a sponge-like appearance. It is an important basic material in the zirconium industry and plays a key role in many industrial fields due to its unique properties. It is made from zirconium ore through a series of complex processing and refining, and is an important raw material for the production of other zirconium products.

The production process of industrial-grade sponge zirconium mainly adopts the Kroll process. First, zircon sand (ZrSiO₄) is mixed with coke, and chlorine is introduced at high temperature to produce zirconium tetrachloride (ZrCl₄) by chemical reaction. In this process, the zirconium element in the zircon sand is converted into zirconium tetrachloride, and the reaction equation is: ZrSiO₄ + 4C + 4Cl₂ → ZrCl₄ + SiCl₄ + 4CO. The generated zirconium tetrachloride is purified by distillation to remove impurities and obtain high-purity zirconium tetrachloride. Then, the purified zirconium tetrachloride and metal magnesium are reduced at a high temperature of 800-900℃ and under the protection of inert gas. Magnesium reduces zirconium in zirconium tetrachloride to generate sponge-like metal zirconium and magnesium chloride. The reaction equation is: ZrCl₄ + 2Mg → Zr + 2MgCl₂. After the reaction, magnesium chloride and excess magnesium in the zirconium sponge are removed by distillation and other methods to finally obtain industrial-grade zirconium sponge.

From the perspective of physical and chemical properties, industrial-grade zirconium sponge has a silver-gray metallic luster, a loose texture, and a sponge-like structure, which is also the origin of its name. It has a large density of about 6.49g/cm³, a melting point of up to 1852℃, good high temperature resistance, and can maintain stable physical and chemical properties under high temperature environment. The chemical properties of sponge zirconium are relatively active. It can react chemically with oxygen, chlorine, etc. at room temperature, forming a dense oxide film on the surface to prevent further oxidation. It also has good corrosion resistance and has strong corrosion resistance to many acids, alkalis and salt solutions, especially in some oxidizing acids, such as nitric acid, it shows excellent corrosion resistance.

In the application field, industrial-grade sponge zirconium is widely used. In the nuclear industry, it is a key raw material for manufacturing nuclear reactor fuel cladding and structural materials. Because zirconium has an extremely low neutron absorption cross-section, it can effectively reduce the loss of neutrons and ensure the efficient operation of the nuclear reactor. At the same time, its good high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance ensure that the fuel cladding and structural materials can work stably for a long time in the extreme environment of the nuclear reactor, ensuring the safety of the nuclear reactor. In the aerospace field, sponge zirconium is used to manufacture aircraft engine blades, combustion chambers, fuselage structural parts, etc. Its high strength, low density and high temperature resistance can reduce the weight of aerospace vehicles, improve flight performance and fuel efficiency, and enhance the strength and reliability of structural parts to meet the stringent requirements of aerospace materials. In the chemical industry, sponge zirconium is often used to manufacture corrosion-resistant equipment such as reactors, pipelines, valves, etc. Its excellent corrosion resistance in highly corrosive media can ensure the long-term stable operation of chemical equipment, reduce equipment maintenance and replacement costs, and improve the efficiency and safety of chemical production. In addition, industrial-grade sponge zirconium also has certain applications in the fields of electronics, metallurgy, medical equipment, etc. For example, in the electronics field, it is used to manufacture heat sinks for electronic components. Its good thermal conductivity can effectively reduce the temperature of electronic equipment and improve the performance and stability of the equipment.
