Gas Lift - Global Industry Market Analysis Report 2020-2031
Description
Gas lift is an oil production method that injects high-pressure gas into the annular space of the oil well casing and the oil pipe, and lifts the crude oil in the oil pipe to the ground with the help of the gas expansion energy. It is one of the important means to increase the production of oil wells and is widely used in the global oil production industry.
From the working principle, gas lift utilizes the compressibility and expansion of gas. When high-pressure gas is injected into the annular space of the oil well from the ground through the gas injection system, it will flow downward along the annular space and reach the gas lift valve position at the bottom of the oil pipe. The gas lift valve is a key component in the gas lift system, which can be opened and closed according to the set pressure. When the gas pressure in the annular space reaches the opening pressure of the gas lift valve, the gas lift valve opens and high-pressure gas enters the oil pipe. The gas entering the oil pipe mixes with the crude oil in the oil pipe, reducing the density of the crude oil. At the same time, due to the expansion of the gas, an upward thrust is generated, which pushes the mixed liquid column upward, thereby lifting the crude oil to the ground.
The gas lift system is mainly composed of ground gas injection equipment, wellhead equipment, downhole gas lift pipe string and gas lift valve. Ground gas injection equipment includes compressors, gas purification devices, etc. The compressor is responsible for compressing low-pressure gas into high-pressure gas, and the gas purification device is used to remove impurities and moisture in the gas to ensure the quality of the injected gas. The wellhead device is used to connect the ground gas injection equipment and the downhole gas lift string, and at the same time plays the role of controlling and regulating the injection pressure and flow. The downhole gas lift string is the channel for gas and crude oil to flow underground, usually composed of oil pipes and supporting tools. The gas lift valve is installed on the gas lift string. Depending on the different gas lift methods and oil well conditions, the type and installation position of the gas lift valve will vary. Common gas lift valves include mechanical gas lift valves and electronic gas lift valves. Mechanical gas lift valves rely on springs and pressure differences to control opening and closing, while electronic gas lift valves use electronic sensors and control systems to achieve more precise control.
Gas lift is used in a variety of oil well mining scenarios. For some low-permeability reservoirs, due to insufficient formation energy, crude oil is difficult to flow to the ground by its own energy. Gas lift can provide additional lifting power to increase crude oil production. In offshore oilfield exploitation, gas lift has become a common oil production method because its equipment is relatively simple, easy to install and maintain, and does not require the installation of large-scale pumping equipment on the offshore platform. In addition, for some high-yield oil wells, gas lift can flexibly control the oil well production and improve the production efficiency of the oil well by adjusting the gas injection volume.
Gas lift has many advantages. It has strong adaptability and can flexibly adjust the gas lift parameters according to the different conditions of the oil well, such as oil layer depth, crude oil properties, formation pressure, etc., to achieve efficient exploitation. The gas lift equipment is relatively simple and the investment cost is low, especially in offshore oil fields and some remote areas, the equipment installation and maintenance cost advantages of gas lift are more obvious. At the same time, the gas lift system has high operating stability and can operate continuously for a long time, reducing the downtime of the oil well. However, gas lift also has some disadvantages. Gas lift consumes a large amount of high-pressure gas, and the application of gas lift will be limited in some areas lacking gas sources. Moreover, downhole equipment such as gas lift valves may fail during long-term operation and need to be repaired or replaced, which increases the operating cost and difficulty of operation.
