Gas atomized metal powders are produced by converting molten metal into fine droplets through a high-pressure gas jet (usually an inert gas such as argon or nitrogen). After atomization, these droplets cool rapidly and solidify into spherical particles, resulting in a high-quality, uniform powder. The process begins by melting the metal in an induction furnace and pouring the molten metal into an atomization chamber where high-velocity gases break it up into droplets. These droplets then solidify in flight and the resulting powder is collected, typically through a cyclone separator. This method allows for precise control of the particle size distribution, typically from a few microns to hundreds of microns, and the use of an inert gas minimizes oxidation, ensuring high purity.

The properties of gas atomized metal powders (i.e., spherical shape, controlled particle size distribution, and fine microstructure) make them ideal for a variety of applications. In additive manufacturing, they are used in processes such as selective laser melting (SLM) or electron beam melting (EBM) due to their excellent flowability and consistent sintering behavior.
