Bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) is an efficient separation and conversion technology based on ion exchange membranes, which is widely used in the fields of electrochemical engineering and environmental engineering. Its core component is the bipolar membrane, a composite membrane structure composed of a cation exchange layer, an interfacial hydrophilic layer and an anion exchange layer. Under the action of a DC electric field, the bipolar membrane can decompose water into hydrogen ions (H⁺) and hydroxide ions (OH⁻), thereby achieving the separation and conversion of salts in the solution. Bipolar membrane electrodialysis technology has the characteristics of high efficiency, energy saving, and environmental friendliness. It can convert inorganic salts (such as sodium sulfate and sodium chloride) into corresponding acids and bases without adding chemical reagents, and at the same time achieve the production of high-purity chemicals. In addition, this technology also has the advantages of ion separation and conversion, environmental protection treatment, and chemical production. It can be applied to new energy fields (such as lithium extraction and concentration from salt lakes), high-salt wastewater treatment, organic acid recovery and preparation, food industry, flue gas desulfurization, and rare earth industry.
