Description

Automotive Interior Fabric is a special textile used for car seats, door panels and ceilings. It is usually made of polyester fiber (PET, accounting for >80%), nylon (PA6 or PA66) or blended materials (such as polyester + suede). It has high wear resistance (Martindale wear >50,000 times), flame retardancy (burning speed<100 mm/min, in line with FMVSS 302) and antibacterial properties (antibacterial rate >99%), thickness 0.5-2 mm, gram weight 200-400 g/m². It is produced through knitting (warp knitting or weft knitting, density >300 needles/in²), coating (PU or PVC, thickness 20-50 μm) and composite technology (hot melt adhesive bonding, peel strength >20 N/cm) to meet the comfort and safety requirements of the interior of the car. For example, in high-end models (such as the BMW 5 Series), suede fabrics provide a soft touch (friction coefficient<0.4) and sound absorption (noise reduction of 5-10 dB); in economical models (such as the Toyota Corolla), polyester fabrics have an anti-fouling coating (oil resistance >90%) to extend their service life (>10 years). Production must pass light fastness tests (ISO 105-B02, color fastness >4) and tensile tests (breaking strength >300 N).

The advantages of automotive interior fabrics are durability and comfort, and supporters believe that they enhance the driving experience. For example, high wear resistance ensures that the seat fabric has no obvious wear during the 10-year service life (surface wear rate<5%); flame retardancy and antibacterial properties improve safety (fire risk is reduced by 50%-70%). However, critics point out that it is not environmentally friendly enough. The production process of polyester fabrics consumes high energy (about 50-70 GJ per ton) and wastewater discharges (about 100-150 m³ per ton of fabric), which may be restricted by environmental regulations (such as EU REACH); some fabrics have poor breathability (water vapor permeability<5000 g/m²/24h), which may cause stuffiness in summer (temperature rises by 2-3°C); in addition, high-end fabrics (such as leather + suede) are expensive (US$10-20 per square meter), pushing up the price of the whole vehicle (about US$500-1000 increase).
