Description

Indian Bioplastic Packaging Market Size, Share & Trends Analysis Report by Type (Rigid Packaging, Flexible Packaging) by Material Biodegradable Bioplastics, Non-biodegradable Bioplastics) and by End-User Industry (Food & Beverages, Consumer Goods, Pharmaceuticals / Healthcare, Cosmetics and Personal Care, and Others) Forecast Period (2026-2035)

Industry Overview

Indian bioplastic packaging market was valued at $285.2 million in 2025 and is projected to reach $689.6 million by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 11.1% during the forecast period (2026-2035). India’s imports of bioplastics play a crucial role in supporting the country’s growing bioplastic packaging industry. As domestic production is still developing, imports from leading exporters provide access to high-quality and technologically advanced bioplastics, enabling manufacturers to meet the rising demand for sustainable, recyclable, and eco-friendly packaging solutions. These imports fill the gap in supply, encourage innovation in packaging styles, and serve industries including food and beverages, personal care, and e-commerce, where the use of bioplastic packaging is gaining momentum.

According to the Assocham Org., during the fiscal year 2022-23, India’s bioplastic imports were predominantly sourced from three major countries.

 Thailand emerged as the top exporter to India, contributing 19% of the imports, amounting to $481 million.

 China was the second-largest exporter to India with an 18% share, equivalent to $462 million.

 Korea accounted for 15% of the imports, amounting to $386 million.

This indicates that the majority of India’s bioplastic imports are sourced from the Asia-Pacific region, which significantly bolsters the country’s expanding packaging sector and drives overall market growth.

Market Dynamics

Government Policies and Regulations

Indian government policies and regulations, including a nationwide ban on single-use plastics, are pushing the demand for bioplastic packaging, thus fueling growth in the Indian bioplastic packaging market. The Indian market for bioplastic packaging has witnessed increasing investment by governments and technological innovations, with increased attention being paid by domestic manufacturers as industries opt for greener alternatives. For instance, in April 2025, Indian researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-I) Indore have formulated cheap and green bioplastics using a specifically designed microbial consortium. This technology can transform research and industry through decreased usage of traditional plastics and the conversion of waste into valuable products. These biodegradable products can be utilized in many areas such as packaging, medicine, agriculture, and consumer goods.

Market Segmentation
  • Based on the type, the market is segmented into rigid packaging, flexible packaging.
  • Based on the material, the market is segmented into biodegradable bioplastics PLA (polylactic acid), SCPC (starch containing polymer compounds), PBAT (polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate), PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates), CR (cellulose regenerates), PBS (polybutylene succinate and copolymers), CP (casein polymers), and non-biodegradable Bioplastics, PA (polyamides), PTT (polytrimethylene terephthalate), PE (polyethylene), PET (polyethylene terephthalate), APC (aliphatic polycarbonates), PP (polypropylene), PEF (polyethylene furanoate).
  • Based on the end-user industry, the market is segmented into food & beverages, consumer goods, pharmaceuticals/healthcare, cosmetics and personal care, and others (agriculture & horticulture, transportation & automotive).
Biodegradable Bioplastics- PLA (Polylactic Acid) Therapy Segment to Lead the Market with the Largest Share

Biodegradable plastics are decomposed by microorganisms into natural materials. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable plastic based on renewable resources such as corn starch or sugar cane. Manufactured by biomass fermentation, PLA is the second-highest produced bioplastic and is applied in plastic films, bottles, and medical equipment globally.

 Shift toward sustainable alternatives.

The Indian bioplastic packaging Market is experiencing a speedy overhaul, with sustainability emerging as the core theme among industries. Increasing regulatory support, rising consumer awareness, and corporate commitments to reduce carbon footprints are accelerating the adoption of bio-based packaging materials. Companies are actively investing in innovative technologies and large-scale production facilities to strengthen domestic availability of biodegradable alternatives and reduce dependence on fossil-based plastics. For instance, in May 2025, India introduced its first PLA biopolymer brand, Balrampur Bioyug, by Balrampur Chini Mills Limited. The Poly Lactic acid (PLA) plant will be India's first industrial-scale biopolymer plant utilizing 100% renewable energy for the entire manufacturing process and converting sugarcane to PLA in a single integrated location, with an estimated gross investment of around $343.37 million. It demonstrated the potential for change of PLA, a bioplastic that offers an alternative to plastics based on fossils. The mobile unit provides live demonstrations, interactive exhibits, and real-world applications, raising awareness and inspiring green materials adoption.

 In October 2024, Praj Industries inaugurated India's first biopolymer plant, employing its Polylactic Acid (PLA) technology. The plant at Jejuri near Pune has the capacity to manufacture 100 tons per year of lactic acid, 60 tons of lactide, and 55 tons of PLA, favoring biodegradable and compostable bioplastics.

Market Players Outlook

The major companies operating in the Indian bioplastic packaging market include BASF SE, Corbion NV, Ecolastic Products Pvt. Ltd., Praj Industries, and The Dow Co. Market players are leveraging partnerships, collaborations, mergers, and acquisition strategies for business expansion and innovative product development to maintain their market positioning.

Recent Developments
  • In August 2025, India's easternmost railway zone transitioned to using compostable bioplastic for packaging bedrolls on trains. This biodegradable material, developed by the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, will be used to distribute 40,000 bioplastic bags across 25 trains originating from terminals in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bengal, Bihar, Tripura, and West Bengal. This initiative supports the mission of the NFR to implement environmentally friendly practices in its transportation system.
  • In January 2025, IIT-M established a Centre of Biodegradable Packaging to develop zero-waste bioplastics, addressing health concerns over microplastics' impact on human health. It aims to develop sustainable packaging similar to fruit. It is a dedicated lab for bioplastics research, funded by a 10-crore grant from the Union Ministry.
  • In March 2024, Sulzer supplied technology and equipment to India's first bioplastics plant, aiming to boost sustainable manufacturing. The plant produced 75,000 tonnes of compostable, recyclable bioplastic annually using sugarcane as a feedstock, utilizing India's main agricultural crop.
