Water-based metalworking fluid—also known as emulsifiable metalworking oil—is a type of coolant-lubricant concentrate that is diluted with water for use in machining operations. It provides both cooling (from the water) and lubrication (from the oil), making it ideal for reducing friction and heat in metal cutting, drilling, milling, grinding, and other processes.
1. Multifunctionality
The application scope of metalworking fluids covers a variety of processing methods such as rolling, drawing, extrusion, forging and cutting. Its wide application field and complex use environment characteristics determine that metalworking fluids must have multifunctional characteristics. At present, metalworking processes have put forward more urgent demands for metalworking fluids with wider adaptability. For example, in cutting processing, a cutting fluid that can be used for boring, drilling, cutting and other processing processes is needed; when hot rolling high-speed rails, it is hoped that the rolling oil can have comprehensive properties such as rolling, lubrication, corrosion inhibition and rust prevention; in the heat treatment process of metal parts, the heat treatment medium is required to have adaptability to different materials, different quenching temperatures and times.
2. Green and environmental protection
Due to the large amount of metalworking (oil) fluids used and their wide dispersion, coupled with insufficient awareness of their harmfulness, most metalworking fluids were directly discharged in the past. In addition, the difficult-to-biodegrade surfactants and harmful sulfur, phosphorus, chlorine and other complexes and inorganic salts contained in metalworking fluids will also cause irreversible damage to the environment. With the increasing global attention to environmental protection, the development of metalworking fluids tends to be more environmentally friendly. Including reducing the use of volatile organic compounds and harmful chemicals, using biodegradable ingredients, and more effective waste liquid treatment methods. At present, China's requirements for biodegradability, ecotoxicity, waste emissions and other indicators of metalworking (oil) fluids are becoming increasingly stringent. Therefore, it is imperative to develop green and environmentally friendly metalworking (oil) fluids.
3. Water-based processing fluids
Metalworking fluids can be divided into two categories: oil-based and water-based according to their composition. Oil-based metalworking lubricants, although they have good lubricity and rust prevention, are easy to volatilize at high temperatures to produce a large amount of oil mist, which not only pollutes the environment, but also harms human health; water-based metalworking lubricants have excellent cooling performance, are not easy to ignite, are safe and reliable, and have abundant water sources, are non-toxic and odorless, are environmentally friendly, and are easily biodegradable. With the enhancement of people's awareness of environmental protection, the call for clean production in the metalworking process is getting louder and louder, and the application of water-based metalworking lubricants will increase.
